Meeting challenges with MMC

The £60,000 house

The 2005 Design for Manufacture challenge to build a house for £60,000, including fees, overheads and profit but excluding land costs, was taken up by a number of house builders. Other criteria was also important, including reducing waste and achieving the BREEAM ECO Homes Very Good.

Three steps gradually filtered out the contestants, until 9 winners were announced. The winners used off-site production, including closed panel systems, light gauge steel, volumetric units, timber frame and structurally insulated panels (SIPs). None of the winners used traditional brick and block construction.

The Design for Manufacture competition embraced many of the technologies developed by the off-site manufacturing centre. See Design for Manufacture Lessons Learnt.
