When should value management be used?

A common pitfall at the inception of a project is to take the initial client brief as gospel and deliver exactly to the requirements of the brief. The first goal of value management is to develop the initial client brief to help the client develop a more comprehensive picture of what is actually required.
A good example is in purchasing a new car. The Range Rover Sport may meet all of the purchaser’s requirements at around £50,000, whereas the Ford Explorer Platinum may meet all the same requirements, but from around £30,000 representing much better value for money.
