Problem 10: Unsupported purlin joints (along the length of the purlin)

Sometimes the original detailing of the roof is compromised. You may find a purlin jointed along its length but supported only on the 'top' joint side. A new heavier roof covering will soon expose this. The detail is illustrated below.

Once you start looking for this type of defect when carrying out building and roof repairs you will be amazed at how often it is encountered.

Solution

A simple plated repair bolting a large section of timber across the joint should be adequate in most cases (see below).
