Repairs: plumbing and heating

Problem 4: Backflows/syphoning

Without suitable checks in the system, water from one pipe can be drawn into another. Tainted water in a WC flush box or washing machine's flexible hose is not to be relished.

Back-syphonage from the pipes can readily occur unless non-return valves are fitted.

Solution

When specifying and checking works, ensure that double non-return valves have been installed, for example to washing machine plumbing/stop valves.

Although unlikely to be a huge problem, the drinking water can quickly become contaminated by phenol plasticisers in the supply pipes to washing machines, dishwashers and the like and readily taint the taste of the water, even if not a health risk.
