Problem 20: Fixing hip tiles

Correct fixing of hip tiles is essential, but wet fixing methods are not always secure.

Solution

Pay careful attention to hip details:

  • When inspecting the roof, the hip iron securing the hip tiles at the bottom of the slope may appear to be sound but often turns out to be completely defective. Tiles could slide off the roof under the next high wind.

When specifying, ensure that hip irons are checked and properly secured, and that all hip tiles are likewise properly secured in a cement bedding or, if necessary, with a mechanical fixing.

Consider using a dry fixing system. This may be both lighter and more secure. There are several systems on the market, and some incorporate an under-flashing membrane for additional protection from driven rain.
